Help The Earth Survive!

On Jan. 20, 1961 JFK in his inaugural speech implored “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” In a book by Jon Kabat-Zinn he mentions a meeting with a meditation teacher who asked Dr. Zinn “How is the world treating you” and then followed it with “How are you treating the world”. We went from country to world.
Two other references this weekend about the issue of pollution and the Earth were Dr. Mercola and the New York Times.
Dr. Mercola’s article stressed the extreme hazard of plastic waste. It is everywhere. Plastic pollution is one of the greatest challenges we face. Petroleum-based plastics are designed to last forever. We produce 200 billion pounds of plastic every year.
Bottled water is perhaps the most environmentally unfriendly industry. Americans consume about 1/2 a billion bottles of water each week. And this water is mostly just filtered tap water. So one can change to glass containers and fill them with your tap water which you can filter. What a gift to the Earth that would be.
And finally a plea from Michael E. Mann (NYT) to have a dialogue about the impact of climate change and begin to very actively implement changes in how we use energy and reduce and dispose of waste.
We really can’t wait. What can you do to move this ahead? Can you ditch your water bottle? Recycle more? Reuse and repair items rather than discard them? What else?
