Free Synagogue of Flushing

Downtown Flushing is a very diverse community with many Asian, Central American, African American and Caucasian residents. A cornerstone of this Queens area is the Free Synagogue of Flushing which has been on or near its present site since 1917. At this time the membership of the congregation is quite small and the FSF is struggling to maintain itself financially.
Most recently the FSF suffered a serious setback by the loss of a tenant (a school) in one of the buildings.
Even so its Rabbi, Michael Weisser has a strong presence in the community. Most recently he led a program on “Race Relations” at the Flushing Town Hall to help the greater community to function well despite the different ethnicities¬†. He also sponsors the yearly Queens Unity Walk among other events.
