The Ultimate Overtreatment

by

Today’s NYT has an article about a book entitled “Overtreated: Why Too Much Medicine is Making Us Sicker and Poorer” by Shannon Brownlee. The author points out that we have an epidemic of overtreatment – too many scans, too many blood tests and too many procedures.
I have a good friend who told me that she was worried about a recent mammogram which her radiologist said needed a follow-up sonogram. This friend who is 90 years old is very worried. She has been subjected to harmful radiation, emotional stress and worry. What’s more I believe that they don’t dare to operate on her. It is too risky. So why all the searching for cancer. Why not leave her alone and let her continue to live well. She feels fine except for the worry they have imposed on her. Are they so desperate for the revenue?
