Noguchi in Mexico

by

In 1935 to 36 Noguchi accepted (verbally) a commission to do a mural in a very large market in Mexico City. The middle and lower pictures are of this work of art as it is today.  It was (is) three dimensional and quite radical in its theme.   At first the government denied him payment and then he got only a third of what he was promised because it was a verbal and not written contract. The bottom picture shows the whole mural.

The fountain is in the Noguchi Museum in Long Island City.
