Marketable Skills

by

The goal of most colleges and universities seems to be simply to enroll students and somehow collect tuition. Whether it is cash from parents or student loans.  The NY Times today reports on a student who has $100,000 debt and is unable to pay this back in a timely way.  Interest payments accrue.  Students are not encouraged to go to cheaper state institutions. In addition there is no attempt made to provide students with marketable skills that enable them to earn a decent living when they graduate. The student written about graduated with an interdisciplinary degree in religious and women’s studies.  What work can she do with these disciplines?

I have a young friend who was majoring in sociology on the undergraduate level.  What good is that?

I think that parents and college personnel have a responsibility to guide students toward ways of earning a decent living when they graduate.
