Saving Haiti’s Mothers


Last night the Now program on PBS highlighted the serious difficulties Haiti’s pregnant women are having.  World wide 500,000 women die in childbirth yearly.  Many of then in Haiti.  The program addressed the limited and poor health care facilities to enable pregnant women and their children survive.  Only once, and as a side comment was the concept of family planning mentioned.  The entire emphasis was on providing medical care for women and the newborn.

Family planning and availability of birth control measures should be in the forefront of health education for population.  If women did not become pregnant so often there would be no medical emergency for them and their babies. And they could take good care of the children they already have.
