Taking Responsibility (Not)

by

I have written about taking responsibility for our health and health care.  Three anectdotes about irresponsible actions.

1.  A friend is scheduled for a colonoscopy with an MD she has used before.  He asks for a pre colonoscopy visit.  She says this is OK because it does not cost anything. Wrong! It does cost. Maybe not her directly. But it costs.

2. Another friend is 7 years post op for lung cancer surgery.  She continues to visit the surgeon because she likes the man.

3. Yet another post cancer patient continues to make yearly visits to her oncologist years after her disease has been treated because the MD requests the visit.

We need to be thinking critically and making intelligent decisions about the treatments we participate in or not.
