End of Life Planning – Taking Responsibility for Oneself.

by

Anxiety about discussing end of life issues with patients can be problematic for doctors.  But their reticence should not deter the patient from planning how he/she wants to end his/her life.

End of life procedures and choices should be discussed routinely with one’s doctor, lawyer and loved ones if and when an individual chooses to do so. It can be part of your yearly check-up if you have such a visit. We need not wait until death is imminent  for the doctor to initiate the discussion. After all we have wills in place, do financial planning and make plans for where and how to live in our later years before we actually need them. End of life procedures should be in the same category. Plan now when you are not faced with the additional burden of having a terminal illness.
