The Magical Years

by

Selma Fraiberg wrote a book, The Magical Years in 1959 about early childhood where a boy goes from receiving the total support and love of his mother to her sudden abandonment of him at 6 years of age.  I read this book in the ’60s and can easily recall empathizing with the boy. It made me feel terrible.  The abandonment was so sudden and complete.  I  never  finished the book because I felt so badly for the boy.

How could she do this, and without warning?  Was it necessary?  Was any harm done by either the complete devotion or the complete abandonment?

Time to read to the end.
